POSCO Engineering & Construction (POSCO E&C) pushed ahead with installing durable public facilities providing food for street cats in Seodaemun-gu District for the local government’s environmentally friendly animal protection project that collaborates with POSCO A&C and the Korean Animal Welfare Association.As one of the places prioritized to install public food facilities, Yonsei University was selected as having few civil complaints and easy to facilitate monitoring and ensuring the cat’s safety. After the installation, the number of street cat cafeterias in Seodaemun-gu has increased to 19, including four last year and six this year. Also, associating with other institutions it plans to work with local volunteers to provide a stable food and water supply to street cats (SDG 15.9 By 2020, integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, development processes, poverty reduction strategies, and accounts). Through the project, Yonsei University anticipates the reduction of the residents' inconvenience caused by the street cats and hopes to raise awareness of animal protection.
Strategic Initiative for Microbiomes in Agriculture and Food at Yonsei University held a mBiome Conference on Phytobiome cooperating with The Korean Society of Plant Pathology. Phytobiome, as a concept that encompasses plants, microbiome, other organisms, and the surrounding environment, was mainly discussed in terms of the status of research and development so that it would ultimately contribute to achieving SDG 15.4 By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development.
