IGEE at Yonsei University successfully completed the Global OT2 program in Vietnam
Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University conducted a problem-solving project Global OT2 in Ho Chi Minh City and Bin Zhuang Province, Vietnam, from January 6th to 15th. Not only Yonsei students but also those from Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities attended to join the project. While the existing overseas volunteer programs were mainly conducted as extracurriculars, the Global OT2 program was conducted in conjunction with regular lectures on student autonomous research. Based on autonomous problem-based learning during lecture hours, students were to identify international community problems, plan mentoring sessions that are practically necessary for local children in Vietnam (SDG 10.2 By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status), and apply them to the field. It aimed to induce university students' interest in solving social problems and ultimately develop leadership and literacy as global citizens.Students were able to learn Vietnam's history and politics and gain background knowledge through lectures on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They also voluntarily formed a fundraising team to conduct fundraising activities and donated desks to local children's institutions.
IHEI Yonsei University held a Herementee program for marginalized teenagers
Herementee, a compound word of Hermes and Menti, is an online platform of Menbongdan that enables 24-hour career exploration mentoring with college student mentors. Herementee program was organized to provide career exploration opportunities for teenagers in information marginalized areas in response to the covid pandemic (SDG 10.2 By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status) by Institute for Higher Education Innovation (IHEI) at Yonsei University. As most career events in the first half of the year were canceled or postponed in the aftermath of COVID-19, it was college students who began to solve the stagnation of career education at the school site. They assisted Herementees to do major exploration, develop a book report, exchange letters with young professionals, and practice writing resumes and preparing interviews. The entire process was free of charge, and the participants said it was really helpful to alleviate their career anxiety.
Yonsei University students doing online education volunteering through one-on-one matching with 120 local middle school students
Under the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic, any face-to-face activities had no choice but to be limited. Yonsei Murray volunteer team, who felt pity for this situation initiated online mentoring for local underprivileged students by using electronic devices and video calls. 120 Yonsei students and 120 middle school students paired up and had a mentoring session for an average of 3 hours a week. Also, aiming to provide an educational opportunity for the underprivileged (SDG 10.2), the Yonsei Mirae campus built 13 online video lecture rooms that can facilitate mentoring as well as serve college lectures. They are also planning to build new facilities that can utilize advanced equipment such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to offer vivid classes.
