The Leadership Center of the Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University, in collaboration with the Lee Yoon Jae Institute for Contemporary Culture and Art, held a leadership workshop on June 5 at Gakdangheon Hall in Daewoo Hall on the Sinchon Campus, inviting writer Young-Hyun Kim. The lecture, titled “The Age of Storytelling,” was designed to explore the meaning and role of storytelling in contemporary society and to encourage students to reflect on how they can transform their own lives and experiences into meaningful narratives.

Prior to the lecture, Kim participated in a tea meeting at the President’s Office. The meeting was attended by Dong-sup Yoon, President of Yonsei University, Han Joon, Director of the Lee Yoon Jae Institute for Contemporary Culture and Art, Chung-Min Kang , Director of the Leadership Center, and other faculty members, who exchanged ideas on culture, education, and leadership for future generations.

During the lecture, Kim explained that storytelling is not simply the act of recounting events, but a process of creating meaning through human desires, choices, and transformation. He emphasized that memorable stories ultimately emerge from the choices individuals make and the growth they experience, noting that the essence of storytelling lies in creating “meaningful change.”

Kim also highlighted the growing importance of storytelling not only in culture and the arts, but also across industries, businesses, and individual lives. He explained that people no longer consume products or information alone; rather, they are drawn to the values and narratives embedded within them. In this changing environment, he noted that the ability to create and communicate one’s own story has become an increasingly important source of competitiveness.

Concluding the lecture, Kim emphasized the importance of recognizing the unique experiences and values that define each individual. He encouraged students to discover meaning within their own experiences and transform them into authentic personal narratives, ultimately creating stories that reflect who they are.

This leadership workshop provided students with a meaningful opportunity to understand the essence and power of storytelling, while reflecting on their own lives from a new perspective and considering how to shape their futures. Meanwhile, the Leadership Center successfully concluded the 2026 spring semester series of leadership workshops through the leadership-linked major course “Leadership Workshop (LEA3101).” The Center plans to continue the program in the fall semester with distinguished speakers from a wide range of fields.
