Activities

To support a wide range of research activities that contribute to achieving the SDGs, the Social Engagement Fund (SEF) program was launched in July of 2018. Students and researchers around the world were called to submit research and project proposals that emphasized implementing and evaluating the impact of the SDGs, which can also result in tangible outputs on top of knowledge alone. The entries were screened by a number of expert panels.

Research and Activity Objectives and Content   This study aims to design and develop an AI chatbot companion within a video game as an alternative social adaptation tool for individuals with schizophrenia. The chatbot provides stable and predictable interactions without criticism or unexpected responses, maintaining a consistent tone and flexible feedback based on user reactions. While an avatar serves as a “spatial substitute,” the chatbot functions as an “interaction substitute.” The goal is to create a personalized digital intervention model that enhances social skills and self-efficacy through a chatbot system capable of adjusting psychological distance.

Research and Activity Plans or Methodology   The study focuses on designing, developing, and pilot-testing a game-based voice-interactive chatbot system to support social reintegration for people with schizophrenia. The main steps include: reviewing the potential of games as social substitute spaces, designing chatbot interaction methods, creating a prototype, conducting preliminary user tests and feedback revisions, and exploring clinical application possibilities.

Expected Effects and Follow-up Plans   Schizophrenia is one of the major mental illnesses worldwide, and many patients struggle with social reintegration even after treatment. This project seeks to develop a digital intervention tool that supports the recovery stage, promoting continuity of mental health care and improving quality of life. The chatbot system offers emotional support and helps prevent secondary problems such as isolation, social anxiety, and low self-esteem, serving as an effective non-medical complement to traditional therapy.

Individuals with schizophrenia often face social exclusion in areas such as education, employment, and relationships. This project provides a safe, controllable environment within a game where users can practice interactions with a non-human chatbot partner without fear of failure, gradually building confidence for real-world communication. By enabling meaningful, human-like relationships through digital means, the study aims to reduce social barriers and support reintegration into society.
