To support a wide range of research activities that contribute to achieving the SDGs, the Social Engagement Fund (SEF) program was launched in July of 2018. Students and researchers around the world were called to submit research and project proposals that emphasized implementing and evaluating the impact of the SDGs, which can also result in tangible outputs on top of knowledge alone. The entries were screened by a number of expert panels.
Research and Activity Objectives and Content Although Sinchon and Yeonhui-dong, where Yonsei University is located, have a high concentration of young people and various sustainability initiatives, there is no integrated platform that organizes this information. Fair trade cafés, zero-waste shops, eco-friendly stores, social enterprises, and community groups related to the SDGs exist independently, but their connections are weak and public accessibility is limited.
This study aims to build a web-based, map-centered platform that systematically organizes and visualizes SDG-related activities in the Sinchon and Yeonhui areas. The platform will help citizens easily choose sustainable consumption and behaviors while serving as a hub that connects sustainability efforts and encourages community participation.
Research and Activity Plans or Methodology The research plan includes the following steps:
Investigate SDG-related spaces and activities in the area, such as fair trade, eco-friendly consumption, social welfare, gender equality, and environmental education.
Classify and organize data according to the 17 SDG goals and by type (shops, institutions, communities, NGOs, etc.).
Develop a map-based platform using QGIS and Mapbox for visualization, and build a user-friendly web interface with React and Firebase.
Design a participatory system where users can recommend new places or leave reviews, allowing for continuous updates through citizen input.
The process involves literature review, field research, data processing, and technical preparation. The team has completed initial map visualization experiments and is developing an MVP prototype using React and Firebase.
Expected Effects and Follow-up Plans
Structuring local SDG activities: The platform will organize scattered sustainability efforts, allowing citizens to intuitively recognize SDG-related spaces in their community.
Ensuring sustainability: A user-driven structure will enable ongoing data updates, turning the platform into a continuously evolving resource.
Educational expansion: The platform can be used in university courses, volunteer programs, and residential college activities as a learning tool.
Regional scalability: Starting from Sinchon and Yeonhui, the model can expand to other universities and regions, eventually forming a nationwide SDG map network.
